The Brookfield under 12 team gave an outstanding performance in the final of the Leinster Branch league which was played in the David Lloyd Centre, Riverview on Sunday. Playing against an experienced Donnybrook team they only succumbed in the third set tie-break of the final match on court. Ryan Baird and Isabel O'Connor gave Brookfield a great start when they came from a set down to win 10-7 in the final set tie-break of the mixed doubles. A brave girls doubles partnership of Ella Lynn Browne and Ruby Monaghan fought tooth and nail to the end of a very close encounter before losing their very first match in the competition. While they were very disappointed in losing their unbeaten record, they were the mainstay of the team right through the qualifying competition to assist the team to reach the final. The last match of the final proved to be the most dramatic when two of the youngest members of the team put it up to a boys doubles pair who were a year older in age and experience. The Brookfiels pair of James Breslin and Gavin O'Neill displayed a maturity and sense of purpose that belied their youthfulness. Having won the first set in a tie-break they were unlucky to lose the second set 6-1, a score which did not do justice to their efforts and standard of play. Despite this setback they matched their opponents point for point in the third set tie-break before going down 10-8.
The performance of the team in the final and throughout the competition brought great credit and joy to the club and this was reflected by the number of supporters who attended the final. The overwhelming feeling was one of pride in the team and it was unanimously agreed by all that the players should be applauded for their achievement and for the sporting way they accepted the disappointment of losing the final. They were a credit to themselves, their families, and Brookfield Tennis Club"
